Kiki Ballroom Scene: A Place of Community, Growth, and Expression

The Kiki ballroom scene in Seattle is thriving, and Converge Media's Deaunte Damper was on the scene at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute to capture the energy and insights of this vibrant community.


Damper spoke with key figures like Randy Ford, Executive Director for Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas, who emphasized the importance of providing a safe and educational space for the BIPOC and Black trans and queer communities. "It's an opportunity to learn and build community," Ford shared.


Julian Everett of Sway Health discussed the powerful intersection of art and healthcare within the ballroom scene, highlighting how Sway Health fosters community-centered spaces that promote wellness and healing through artistic expression. Squeakk Telfar, a respected community leader and coach, spoke about the freedom and self-expression that ballroom provides, stating, "Ballroom means freedom to me. It's an opportunity for me to be able to express myself when I don't have the words." dani tirrell, Artistic Director of Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas, shared the rich history of ballroom culture and its roots in fighting for recognition and acceptance.
