Urban League Guild Celebrates Black Women Leaders in Washington State

#Back2Besa - On March 30, 2025, the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle’s Central District was filled with joy, sisterhood, and celebration as the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Guild hosted its first annual Trailblazing Black Women in Washington State brunch.

The event honored both historic and present-day trailblazers across teaching, healthcare, politics, media, and community service. Inspired by Marilyn Morgan’s book Black Women Trailblazers of Washington State, the event paired historic figures with women currently walking in their legacy. Honorees included Michelle Merriweather, CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, who was recognized for Community & Leadership; Dr. Elizabeth Wako, President of Swedish Medical Center, honored for Health & Wellness; Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth for Community Advocacy & Politics; and Dr. Sarah Pritchett-Goodman for Education Leadership. Marilyn Morgan herself was also honored as the event’s featured author.

The Guild also recognized five Women to Watch: activist and entrepreneur Chardonnay Beaver, Keisha Credit, Besa Gordon, Nicole Bascomb-Green; and Jazmyn Scott.

“We wanted them to know that we see you. Our eyes are on you,” said Seattle Guild President Collette Robinson.

With warmth, laughter, and deep gratitude, the event felt like a family reunion. “It felt like a big hug,” one attendee shared, surrounded by aunties, mentors, and new friends.

The day also marked a historic moment with the proclamation of March 30 as Trailblazing Black Women in Washington State Day, solidifying this celebration as an annual tradition.

“Our youth is our future,” said Tina-Marie Moore. “We have to keep bringing each person into the forefront so no one is forgotten.”
