The Crocodile Presents: Dua Saleh, Sam Austins

It’s tempting to describe Dua Saleh as a natural. An artist who only began recording music two years ago isn’t supposed to sing with such infectious bravado and haunting gloom. Yet to say Dua, who identifies as gender non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, has arrived fully-formed on their first ever EP project titled Nūr (pronounced “noor” - meaning “the light” in Arabic). They may have just decided to try songwriting, but they’ve spent their life working across divisions: borders, mediums, identities, and protest lines. It is Dua Saleh’s fluidity of sound and form that makes them so enlivening. Their vocal range is elastic, floating from an elegant purr into an unvarnished, guttural growl, and then back again at a moment’s notice. Their writing can be dreamy, but more often plumbs the soul, pricking deep with a poet’s precision and showing the scars that remain. To listen to Dua Saleh is to hear, in real time, someone fight for the right to define themselves for themselves.

Don Toliver will be hitting the road with his Hardstone Psycho album on his biggest North American headlining tour to date this fall, the Psycho Tour, Live Nation announced Monday (July 15).

Teezo Touchdown will join as a special guest, while Monaleo will serve as the opening act. Jhené Aiko is an alternative R&B singer from Los Angeles, California. After getting her start as a backing vocalist for ’00s boy band B2K, Aiko’s breakthrough came with her 2011 mixtape Sailing Soul(s). Her debut EP, Sail Out, followed in 2013 and contained the singles “3:16AM,” “Bed Peace” featuring Childish Gambino and “The Worst.” Further albums in Aiko’s discography include her 2014 debut full-length Souled Out, her 2017 sophomore effort Trip and 2020’s Chilombo which earned the artist three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. In 2023, Aiko released her single “Calm & Patient,” which likely serves as a precursor to her upcoming and as-yet-untitled fourth album.

Travis Thompson is a rapper from Burien, raised by a Navajo father and white mother, from one of the most diverse school districts in the nation. Thompson’s playful sound is guided by rhymes that combine evocative description and candid emotion. After being featured on Macklemore’s “Corner Store,” he made his major-label debut with the 2019 EP Runaways. In a short amount of time, Travis has created a come up story and garnered a cult-like following that’s impossible to ignore.
