Trae Holiday sat down with Willis Walker to discuss Black Men Run Seattle, an initiative promoting health and wellness among Black men. Walker, a member of the Seattle chapter, shared his experiences and the positive impact the group has had on him and the community.

Black Men Run was founded 11 years ago in Atlanta, Georgia, and has since expanded to numerous cities across the country. The Seattle chapter, which Walker joined after moving to the city, meets every Sunday for runs and Thursdays for additional gatherings.

While running is a central activity, the focus of Black Men Run extends beyond fitness. Walker emphasized the sense of community and camaraderie that the group provides, describing it as a space for "Black boy joy." Members, ranging in age from 20 to 65, come together to share jokes, laughter, and support.

Walker also highlighted the importance of addressing mental health within the Black community. Following the loss of a friend to suicide, he and others initiated weekly Zoom check-ins to create a safe space for open communication and vulnerability. This evolved into incorporating yoga, meditation, and reflections led by various members.

Black Men Run Seattle has fostered strong connections among its members, extending beyond their weekly meetings. Walker shared heartwarming stories of members supporting each other through difficult times and celebrating milestones together. The group's welcoming atmosphere encourages participation from individuals of diverse backgrounds and fitness levels.

Walker announced two upcoming events: a historic run on August 11 starting at the oldest African American Episcopal Church and a family-friendly run on August 18 between The Station coffee houses in Beacon Hill and Columbia City. Those interested in joining Black Men Run Seattle can find more information on their Instagram page, @BMR_Seattle.

Willis Walker's interview on The Day With Trae sheds light on the vital role that Black Men Run Seattle plays in promoting physical and mental well-being within the Black community. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, the group empowers members to prioritize their health and build lasting connections.
