Building Community: Taylor Farley on the Queer Power Alliance

In a recent episode of The Day with Trae, host Trae Holiday welcomed Taylor Farley, who came on the show to discuss the Queer Power Alliance (QPA). The QPA is an organization founded in 2005 to support the LGBTQIA+ community. Initially established as an allyship group, QPA became a nonprofit in 2018. Farley became the executive director during the pandemic, leading to a rebranding that emphasized the organization's mission: building collective power for LGBTQIA+ liberation.

The organization has achieved significant milestones in recent years, including securing funding for a project aimed at addressing service gaps for marginalized communities in South King County. This involves gathering data through surveys from LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of color, and those with disabilities to identify issues in housing, economic opportunities, healthcare, and voting access. The results of this research will help inform policymakers and drive community-led initiatives.

Farley expressed excitement about the collaboration with various community organizations and emphasizes the importance of data in advocating for marginalized voices, which were often overlooked in the past. They highlight an upcoming gala on October 12, featuring keynote speakers and the unveiling of survey findings, as a way to engage the community and promote future advocacy efforts.

Additionally, the conversation touches on the intersectionality of issues faced by community members, advocating for a comprehensive approach that considers multiple identities and experiences. The QPA believes that uplifting marginalized voices ultimately benefits everyone.

The QPA is set to host a gala on October 12, 2024, from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This year's event will take a more straightforward approach, focusing on community engagement rather than elaborate entertainment.
