Chevonna Gaylor on ‘The Day with Trae’: The Critical Intersection of Mental Health and Community Safety

This week on a special 100 Days of Action episode of The Day with Trae, host Trae Holiday interviewed Chevonna Gaylor, Clinical Director at CoLEAD, to discuss the critical role of mental health in addressing community safety and gun violence. Gaylor highlighted that the roots of gun violence are deeply embedded in systemic issues and generational trauma, requiring more than just surface-level solutions.

She emphasized that understanding mental health is essential for both prevention and healing. Gaylor’s approach focuses on relational and culturally competent therapy, challenging the traditional methods that often alienate those in need, especially within marginalized communities. She pointed out that many people avoid therapy due to stigma or distrust, yet they could benefit from a supportive space where they feel heard and validated.

Trae Holiday praised Gaylor for her compassionate and tailored approach to mental health, which includes being present for individuals in crisis, offering them a safe space to express themselves, and helping them navigate their healing journey. Gaylor underscored the importance of recognizing the continuum of mental health—from everyday struggles to severe conditions—and the need for community awareness on how to identify when someone might need professional help.

Gaylor also stressed the significance of mental health care for community workers and violence interrupters who are constantly exposed to trauma. She urged for greater resources and support systems to provide them with the tools to manage their own emotional well-being while they serve others.

During the conversation, Chevonna Gaylor shed light on the profound impact of trauma and the necessity of mental health services as a "gym for your emotions," promoting ongoing care and wellness for both individuals and communities.
