Homestead Community Land Trust: Creating Permanently Affordable Homes Through Collective Ownership

The Day With Trae recently welcomed Kathleen Hosfeld, Executive Director of Homestead Community Land Trust, to discuss the organization's work in addressing affordable homeownership in King County and Pierce County.

Homestead Community Land Trust is a nonprofit organization that aims to make homeownership attainable for people with below-average incomes. With over 246 homes currently in trust, Homestead provides permanently affordable homes through a unique model rooted in the civil rights movement. This model involves collective ownership of land, ensuring that residents have a voice in their community's governance.

During the interview, Hosfeld emphasized the need for affordable housing solutions in King County, where the median home price far exceeds what median-income households can afford. She highlighted Homestead's impact in creating an alternative economy for homeownership, allowing families to build equity and achieve stability.

Hosfeld also discussed the organization's advocacy efforts to increase resources and lower barriers to affordable housing production. She stressed the importance of community involvement and encouraged listeners to become members of Homestead or support their work through donations.

The interview concluded with an invitation to an upcoming event featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson, who will discuss themes of systemic inequity and the ongoing work for black homeownership in the Puget Sound area.
