LANGSTON's Sadiqua Iman Talks Latest Highlights: Upcoming Events and Community Programs

Sadiqua Iman, Program Director at LANGSTON, recently joined Trae Holiday on "The Day With Trae" to discuss the organization's latest events and programs. Starting the segment, Iman highlighted the Learn at Langston comedy classes, which are nearing the end of their current session but are expected to return soon.

"We'll probably be doing more of it. They have a showcase coming up, as well as a blackout comedy show that we'll be doing at Langston, to highlight," Iman said. "[There's] so much hard stuff happening all the time. So this comedy class and comedy showcase gives you a reason to perfect your jokes that you tell at the barbecues. Go in and get a little technique behind it, and get ready to hop up on stage."

Another exciting program is their Healing African Drum classes, happening every Monday.

"No matter who you are, where you are, where you're coming from, bring your people," Iman said. "Drums are provided. All you got to do is come and get ready to drum and get some healing."

Other upcoming programs at LANGSTON focus on health and wellness. One highlight is Mindful Movement, led by Niela Maryam, which offers a communal experience featuring dance, stretching, sound bowl healing, and guided meditation. Another program is Space is the Place, where individuals can sign up for creative sessions using LANGSTON's performance stage. Additionally, the organization is featuring The Uterine Files, a science fiction play that explores Black women's health through an Afrofuturistic lens, addressing themes of trauma and ancestral heritage.

"This is why I work with my people; they know how to take care of themselves and just bring everything to the show,"Iman said, "The Uterine Files opened yesterday."

The Uterine Files will be performed on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM. The final performance will be on Sunday, June 2, at 2:00 PM.

For Iman, connecting with various educators is essential to introducing exciting programs and classes at LANGSTON. She believes expanding the organization's offerings involves extensive networking beyond the workplace and actively engaging with the community.

"I go to the festivals, I go to shows. I go when I see the interesting things that Black people are doing. I try to go and check it out, and that's how I get a chance to meet people who I never would," Iman said. "I'm working full time, so it's not like I'm just running into people all the time. If I go to other people's events [and] support, I'm like, 'Oh, wow, that was a great instructor or, Oh, that was a good performance.' I need to hit them up."
