Understanding Menopause: Insights, Support, and Self-Care Strategies with Danyale Thomas

On The Day with Trae, host Trae Holiday welcomed menopause mentor Danyale Thomas to discuss the complexities of menopause, sharing insights from their ongoing series about the symptoms and effects that women face. Trae acknowledged experiencing symptoms herself and emphasized how Danyale's discussions had helped her understand and attribute them to menopause rather than personal health failures.

Danyale highlighted that all women born with a uterus will face menopause, typically between ages 35 and 55. She has covered over 36 symptoms in previous discussions, aiming to spark curiosity among women and encourage them to engage with healthcare providers. The conversation noted that Black women often face more severe symptoms, are less likely to receive treatment, and are not always believed by medical professionals. The importance of creating spaces for shared experiences, such as the mainstream menopause Facebook group that Danyale started, was discussed as a way for women to feel supported.

Addressing relationships and dating, Danyale spoke about being upfront with potential partners about menopausal experiences. She also promoted an upcoming anti-inflammatory cooking class at PCC, designed to help women manage menopause-related health issues like weight gain, heart health, and bone health.

The discussion extended to financial planning for longevity, given that women are now living longer and facing menopause for more extended periods. Danyale advocated for proactive retirement strategies and healthcare planning in one's 30s and 40s to ensure vitality and financial stability into old age.

Lastly, Danyale announced a screening of The M Factor, a documentary about women's menopause experiences, to be held on November 16, with a panel discussion involving health professionals. She shared a personal struggle with dental health linked to menopause, emphasizing the need for broader recognition of menopause-related symptoms across medical fields.

For those interested in joining the conversation on menopause, Thomas invites women to connect with her and her group by emailing Mainstreamingmenopause@gmail.com or by joining the Mainstreaming Menopause group on Facebook.
