Chief Awodi Shares Healing Power Of Drumming On The Day With Trae

"Drums represented the sound of freedom for our people," reflects Awodi, emphasizing the profound significance of drumming in his life and community. He recounts facing prejudice and misunderstanding, even from those within his community. "I remember sometimes, like, some teachers would ask us about some of our beliefs at home and everything...the moment I would, like, say something like, 'Hey, yeah, my family does African spirituality,' they'd be like, 'Oh, so you worship the devil.'"

Despite the challenges, Awodi's passion for drumming and his commitment to his heritage remained steadfast. Now, he's the Executive Director of the Hawk Foundation for Research and Education in African Culture, using drumming as a tool for healing and empowerment. "We're working with the Department of Health right now to actually implement African drumming as a health modality," he shares, highlighting his dedication to community well-being.
