Beacon Hill Golf Course Renamed to Honor Local Trailblazer Bill Wright
Beacon Hill recently came together to celebrate the renaming of the Jefferson Park Golf Course to the Bill Wright Golf Complex, a historic moment honoring a local trailblazer. Bill Wright's legacy of inclusivity and excellence in the sport of golf has inspired many, and this renaming solidifies his impact on the community.
Derek Liddell, a family member of Bill Wright and the President of the AP National Golf Club, highlighted the significance of this honor, stating, "This is a historic renaming for a citizen of our city who was fighting against discrimination for all people, he was fighting for inclusion before inclusion was popular in 1947 so blacks and non-whites could have a chance to play the game that they love." Wright's influence extended far beyond the golf course, inspiring those around him to break barriers and create a more inclusive future.
Robert Woody Woodard, a fellow golfer and friend, reflected on Wright's impact, stating, "Bill Wright was a part of that legacy... mentorship that we get besides the athletic part, we can go back to Jackie Robinson, we can go back to Joe Lewis." The renaming of the golf complex serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and the enduring spirit of a community united in its pursuit of a brighter future for all.
