Mikayla Weary, a film major at Dillard University in New Orleans, shares her insightful experience as a production intern at Converge Media. Working on The Day With Trae, Mikayla found the internship to be an invaluable hands-on learning opportunity. Unlike traditional film school, which often focuses heavily on theoretical knowledge, this internship allowed her to dive straight into the field.

"It's definitely been like learning in every realm. You kind of get into the field, like you're in there, and it's just the best way to learn," Mikayla explains. "In film school, you're often just in the books, and there's not really the opportunity to be in the field, especially with people who look like us in this industry."

Mikayla emphasized the significance of working with professionals who share similar backgrounds and experiences. The mentorship she received was instrumental in her growth, allowing her to actively participate in various aspects of production and gain practical skills that textbooks couldn't provide.

Working alongside TraeAnna Holiday, the host of The Day With Trae, was another highlight of Mikayla's internship. "Trae is amazing," Mikayla shares. "She's funny, really cool, and a great person to look up to. Watching how she connects with each guest and contributes to the community has been wonderful."

Mikayla also praised her director, EriK Kalligraphy, for his guidance and expertise. "EriK is great," she says. "He taught me everything—organization, being hands-on with the cameras, all that type of stuff." EriK's teaching style, which met Mikayla at her level and provided clear explanations, fostered a positive learning environment.

The internship reinforced Mikayla's belief in the importance of Black Media Matters Studio and platforms like Converge Media. "In Seattle specifically, the Black voice in media is often overlooked, or people try to control the narrative of what's happening in our communities and tell our stories for us," Mikayla observes. "But it's important that we have Black media companies like Converge that tell our own stories and curate them in a positive light."

Mikayla's experience at Converge Media showcases the power of hands-on learning, mentorship, and representation in media. It underscores the need for platforms that empower and uplift marginalized voices, allowing them to tell their own stories and shape the narrative.
