Recently on "The Day with Trae," founder of Inspirational Productions, Sheila "Kay" Blackwell, stopped by to talk with host Trae Holiday about her upcoming video shoot for her latest song, "Black Voice Crying Out."

Her business, Inspirational Productions, is dedicated to promoting shows and events that uplift humanity. Her video shoot on June 29 is not just about uplifting others but also about rediscovering Kay’s dreams now that her kids are grown.

She wrote the song during 2020, when the world was on lockdown and George Floyd had just been murdered.

“I kept hearing this Black voice crying out,” Blackwell said. “We're just always crying out, and we need people to hear that.”

She wrote the lyrics for the song and then worked with producer Jamal Robinson, aka Roc Phizzle, to create the music for "Black Voice Crying Out."

“This will be my very first music video shoot of a song that I wrote,” Blackwell said. “I just want to let everyone know that they're welcome to join us. We want everyone to show up in their Black Lives Matter T-shirts or something Afrocentric, and just get the word out there.”

Blackwell began working with Roc Phizzle after she reached out to him asking for help with some music that she wanted to write.

“It was a little challenging for him at first because he had to step outside of his comfort zone and do a ballad, you know, and a lot of spoken word because I love doing spoken word,” Blackwell said. “We would stay up all night. And we grew very close through that process. He's my little brother now, you know.”

For Blackwell, shooting locally was important to her message.

“I wanted to do something locally that addresses that issue of police violence and racial profiling and everything else that we have to deal with,” Blackwell said. “And then on top of that, show how dope we are. Because you know, when Black people get together, we know how to make things happen. We'll turn anything into a party.”

The music video shoot will take place at Stan Sayres Memorial Park. The event is scheduled for Saturday, the 29th, from noon until 3 PM. The shoot will be divided into three parts, with snacks and water provided for participants. Vendors are welcome to set up camp and sell food at the location. All attendees are encouraged to arrive by noon wearing Black Lives Matter T-shirts or Afrocentric attire to represent Seattle.
