The BIPOC Ed Coalition: Prioritizing Wellness for Leaders of Color

In a recent interview on The Day with Trae, host Trae Holiday spoke with Jodi Nishioka, co-director of the BIPOC Ed Coalition. She shared the inspiring story of how the organization came to be and the important work they are doing to support leaders of color.

The BIPOC Ed Coalition was formed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately affected communities of color. Nishioka and her co-directors recognized the immense pressure and burnout faced by leaders in these communities and called an emergency meeting to assess their needs. The overwhelming response highlighted the need for wellness support and resources, leading to the creation of the coalition.

Since then, the BIPOC Ed Coalition has focused on providing wellness programs and sabbaticals for leaders of color. Recognizing the lack of existing sabbatical programs, particularly for this demographic, the coalition developed a program that offers paid three-month sabbaticals, including coverage for salaries, benefits, and additional support for staff. To date, they have awarded 41 sabbaticals, allowing leaders to take much-needed breaks and prioritize their well-being.

Nishioka emphasized the importance of listening to the community and adapting their programs based on feedback. This has led to the creation of shorter sabbatical options, such as two-week and one-month breaks, to accommodate different needs. The coalition also hosts community events and retreats, fostering connection and collaboration among leaders of color.

The impact of these sabbaticals has been profound, with many leaders expressing gratitude for the opportunity to rest, heal, and reconnect with themselves. Nishioka highlighted the significance of this work, especially in a culture that often prioritizes productivity and achievement over well-being. By offering these sabbaticals, the BIPOC Ed Coalition is working to cultivate a culture of wellness and resistance, empowering leaders of color to continue their vital work in a sustainable way.
