The Power of Community: Simon Okelo's Madaraka Festival Celebrates 11 Years of Impact

Born from a vision of unity and empowerment, this festival has grown from its Seattle roots to become a beacon of hope for thousands across East Africa.
Okelo recounted the festival's humble beginnings in 2014, "we came together with a number of brothers and sisters here in Seattle in the living room of Dr. Matia Arunga." This grassroots initiative quickly blossomed into a powerful force for change, using music and arts to create opportunities for youth.
The impact has been profound. "We've been doing this every year and using part of the proceeds to continue growing the education music and art program, which has now served over 20,000 youths across East Africa," Okelo proudly stated. This achievement underscores the festival's commitment to fostering talent and providing alternatives to drugs and violence.
Last year's 10th anniversary celebration in Kenya was a milestone, drawing an impressive crowd of 5,000 attendees. Okelo reflected on the event's significance: "People were hungry for it. People had been seeing it happening in the US for almost 10 years."
Beyond entertainment, Madaraka Festival embodies a deeper purpose. Okelo explained, "Madaraka celebrated us the day that the British gave up. The British said, 'Okay, now you guys figure out what your future is going to look like.'" This spirit of self-determination and unity continues to drive the festival's mission.
Looking ahead, the 11th Madaraka Festival is scheduled for September 6 at Pier 62 in Seattle. Okelo emphasized the importance of community involvement, encouraging everyone to stay informed and participate.
