Since 1991, GSBA has invested over $6 million in LGBTQ+ and allied students, supporting 552 scholars with a graduation rate of 81%, well above the national average of 62%. During the 2024 school year alone, GSBA supported 70 scholars! Beyond receiving financial assistance through our scholarships, GSBA offers our cohort additional essential resources that go beyond tuition, such as professional networking opportunities and emergency funds.

NORITA tells the extraordinary story of Nora “Norita” Cortiñas, a prominent figure in Argentina's struggle for human rights. The documentary showcases Norita's transformation from a grieving mother into a powerful activist, following the disappearance of her son, Carlos Gustavo, during Argentina’s military dictatorship in the 1970s. In the aftermath of her loss, Norita co-founded the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, an organization that has played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of those who were "disappeared" by the regime.

ACT Contemporary Theatre announced today the cast and creative team for the opening show of their 2024/25 Season, POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive. This Tony-nominated comedy, written by Selina Fillinger and directed by Jillian Armenante, begins September 7 and has already announced an extension to the run, now closing September 29.

SEATTLE— In October, Seattle Opera audiences will experience a unique new work by visionary writer and director Tazewell Thompson, whose opera Blue was hailed by The New York Times as “the most elegant libretto heard in a long time.” Jubilee tells the story of a group of Black American singers who brought African American spirituals to audiences around the world, forever changing the trajectory of music history.

Besa Gordon, the beloved host of Back2Besa on FOX 13 Seattle, has officially renewed her contract with the network for a second season. The Seattle Human Services Department announced the return of its Summer Food Service Program, starting July 1st. This vital program, also known as the Summer Meals Program, will be available at 70 locations throughout the city, including 13 in District 3. Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival today unveils the 2024 cohort of its Workforce Development Program. The six-month, tuition-free program for 19 young adults residing in Seattle provides mentorship and teaches the technical, creative and business aspects of the live entertainment industry to prepare participants for future work in the field of live entertainment. 

Key to Change invites the public to its 7th annual Spring Salon Fundraiser at Benaroya Hall on April 7, 2024 from 2-4pm. The Spring Salon Fundraiser is an awards ceremony that features musical performances from students who participated in the Key to Change Solo String Festival. Additionally, Dr. Sheila Edwards Lange, Chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma, will be recognized with the Community Achievement Award for her ongoing support for underserved students living in South King County. 

General Director Christina Scheppelmann announced today the appointment of bass Kenneth Kellogg as Seattle Opera’s inaugural Artistic Ambassador. Kellogg, who recently completed a triumphant run as Malcolm X in X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, takes over for Naomi André, who concludes her impactful five-year term as Seattle Opera’s first Scholar-in-Residence at the end of the 2023/24 season. Kellogg begins in the role in May 2024.

Our current Seattle Civic Poet, Shin Yu Pai, is beginning the final cycle of her two-year commission with a multi-site public poetry installation (6MB slide deck) for National Poetry Month in April. Last year, Pai invited public input on identifying and prioritizing the campaign’s theme. What emerged was a call for short poems on Seattle places relating to sustainability. She received 51 submissions from poets and selected five individuals for inclusion in the project.
